This is primarily because of the way in which potential customers look for items and services has changed. In the past, a person may have looked through a catalogue or a business directory to find what they need. These days, searching for a place to spend your money is predominantly an online affair.

Even if the customer wishes to visit an actual shop made of bricks rather than browse items online all day, they will look for the store location or quickly browse the store’s inventory online to get an idea of the price. It is estimated that the vast majority of shoppers now find businesses through an internet search engine.

This has led to many shops falling behind. And the shops who have taken advantage of these online business opportunities to flourish. The shops who have been left behind have had a global financial crises to mask their failure to exploit these opportunities, many high street chains have been quick to blame a lack of retail activity on people not having enough disposable income. This theory does at least hold some weight. Many people’s disposable income has declined and their shopping activity has dropped off as a result, but this doesn’t explain why some businesses are doing very well.

The reason the shops that have done well have been ahead of the curve, is that they have been proactive in looking for a new customer base whilst other shops have remained stagnant. These people noticed the shift to online trade and customer browsing online and did something about it. They are now in a very strong position whilst their competitors may be struggling to keep their doors open.

The good news is, is that if you have been a little slow off the mark, there is still time to do something positive about it. If you have neglected the internet side of your business in the past (or perhaps you don’t even have a website) you should start doing something now.

If you own or are in a management position in a retail business, or indeed any business, you should be turning a lot of your attention to internet marketing as fast as humanly possible. The internet is still very much like the wild west at the moment, and those people who stake their claim to their little part of internet land will have a valuable asset in the future. As time advances and internet marketing becomes ever more complex and competitive, it will also get more costly and time consuming, so doing something about it now will save you a lot of time and money in the future.

Expanding your customer base online will also allow you to sell to the whole world rather than just the area around your premises. Shops are very concerned with their location, but then neglect the biggest location of them all, the World Wide Web, it’s called “world wide” for a reason.

So if you have been slow off the mark, start putting it right as soon as possible and start taking advantage of online business opportunities.
