the art of effective affiliate marketing begins with understanding the tools you will need to communicate with the hundreds of millions who surf the internet every day.

Of course, the difficulty is getting those people to see your website and entice them to purchase those products. Unlike an offline business where the traditional means of putting up a sign and placing an ad in the paper can get things rolling, you will have to be a bit more creative, but the efforts can pay off if you can understand the basic strategies and be persistent.

One method of getting potential customers to your site is utilizing a list of subscribers, normally through a newsletter that you send out to email addresses on a regular basis. Of course, you can ask those who visit your site to subscribe to a newsletter, but the catch is how to get them there. One method is purchasing what’s known as a “double opt in” list.

A “double opt-in” is an agreement from a person who accepts your email from a website to also receive a newsletter. There is a catch in that you must find out their exact address first; otherwise your information disappears into the ether. You have probably seen offers by other internet marketers in you email box or while visiting their
sites, an offer pops up that asked you if you want to receive a weekly newsletter.

For those living in the United States, there are laws that require you to obtain their permission and they can cancel the newsletter at any time.
Getting a newsletter by visiting a website is known as a “single opt-in”.
This means that the one sending the newsletter has certain rules and regulations that they can follow, such as sending out an offer to purchase goods or services. Be sure to read the rules, in particular the terms and privacy policy, which might allow your email address to be sent to others which may flood your mailbox.  This is similar to an offline marketing technique called “direct mail”, where your mailbox is flooded with flyers from various local businesses.

Unlike an offline business, such as a brick and motor store, you can start small and set your own schedule to promote your affiliate business. And traditional offline marketing techniques generally do not work well for those on a small budget.
Be sure to offer something free to those visiting your website, usually some valuable information in the form of an article or report that they can use as well.

So in conclusion, if you are going to join an affiliate marketing program and promote a particular product or service, be sure that you are familiar with it first. Then, it’s best to seek out advice, purchase knowledgeable books, and begin trying out simple online marketing techniques to slowly, but surely build your profits.
